Zero Conditional

Hechos, verdades generales e instrucciones que siempre se cumplen.

El Zero Conditional expresa verdades universales, hechos científicos e instrucciones que son siempre ciertas: si ocurre X, siempre ocurre Y. No hay posibilidad ni hipótesis; es una relación de causa y efecto que no falla. 'If you heat water to 100°C, it boils.'

Se forma con Present Simple en las dos cláusulas: tanto la condición (IF) como el resultado van en presente simple. No hay WILL, no hay pasado. Es la condicional más sencilla estructuralmente, pero los hispanohablantes a veces ponen WILL en el resultado por analogía con el First Conditional.

El Zero Conditional también sirve para instrucciones o procedimientos: 'If the light turns red, stop the car.' Aquí el presente simple da la instrucción de forma directa y universal. En estos casos, el resultado puede ir con imperativo en lugar de presente simple.

La palabra WHEN puede reemplazar a IF cuando la relación es totalmente segura o habitual, no solo condicional. 'When you heat ice, it melts' es equivalente a 'If you heat ice, it melts'. Sin embargo, IF implica una posibilidad mientras WHEN implica que el evento ocurrirá con certeza.

Errores típicos: poner WILL en el resultado ('If water reaches 100°C, it will boil') — esto es propio del First Conditional, no del Zero. También confundir cuándo usar IF y cuándo WHEN según el grado de certeza del evento.
