Past Simple vs Past Continuous

Contraste entre acción completa y acción en progreso

La distinción entre Past Simple y Past Continuous refleja dos perspectivas del pasado muy diferentes. El Past Simple ve la acción como un evento COMPLETO, con inicio y fin claramente delimitados ('She called me'). El Past Continuous la ve como una película en marcha, mostrando la acción en su interior, sin importar el principio ni el fin ('She was talking on the phone').

En español la distinción es parecida: 'llamó' vs 'estaba llamando'. Sin embargo, los hispanohablantes cometen el error de usar siempre el Past Simple porque es la forma que primero aprenden, ignorando el Past Continuous incluso cuando la escena lo exige.

La combinación más poderosa de estos dos tiempos aparece en narrativas: usas Past Continuous para pintar el fondo (qué estaba ocurriendo) y Past Simple para los eventos principales (qué pasó). 'I was having dinner when the earthquake started' — el fondo (was having) y el evento (started).

Los conectores WHEN y WHILE ayudan a distinguirlos: WHEN suele ir con Past Simple (para el evento que interrumpe o para situar el momento), WHILE suele ir con Past Continuous (para la acción de fondo). Sin embargo, 'while' también puede ir con dos Past Continuous simultáneos.
