Past Continuous

Acciones en progreso en el pasado

El Past Continuous describe una acción que ESTABA EN CURSO en un momento del pasado. No dice cuándo empezó ni cuándo terminó; solo muestra que la acción estaba sucediendo. En español lo traducimos con 'estaba + gerundio' (estaba comiendo, estaba trabajando), así que la idea es familiar — lo difícil es recordar la estructura correcta en inglés.

La fórmula usa el auxiliar WAS/WERE + el verbo terminado en -ING. Un error muy común para hispanohablantes es olvidar el WAS/WERE y decir solo 'I working' o 'they playing'. Ese auxiliar es obligatorio y también debe concordar con el sujeto (was para I/he/she/it, were para you/we/they).

El Past Continuous se usa principalmente en tres situaciones: (1) describir una acción en progreso en un momento específico del pasado ('At 8 pm, I was watching TV'), (2) crear el fondo de una historia o escena ('It was raining and the streets were empty'), (3) mostrar una acción que fue interrumpida por otra acción (usando 'when'). Esta última es la más importante pedagógicamente.

Para preguntas se invierte el orden: WAS/WERE va antes del sujeto. Para negativos, se añade NOT: wasn't/weren't + -ing. Nada de 'did' — al igual que el verbo BE, este tiempo es independiente de 'did'.
