Past Simple — Verb to be

Cómo usar was y were en el pasado

El verbo 'to be' en pasado tiene solo dos formas: WAS y WERE. No necesitas auxiliares ni reglas complicadas. La clave es saber cuándo usar cada una: WAS va con I, he, she, it (singular); WERE va con you, we, they (plural).

Un error frecuente es decir 'you was' o 'they was' — recuerda que 'you' siempre toma 'were', incluso cuando te diriges a una sola persona.

Para hacer preguntas, simplemente inviertes el orden: colocas WAS o WERE delante del sujeto. No necesitas 'did'. 'There was / there were' funciona igual: 'there was' para un elemento singular y 'there were' para varios. Los hispanohablantes olvidan distinguir 'there was one cat' de 'there were three cats' porque en español 'había' no cambia.

Las respuestas cortas son concisas: 'Yes, I was.' / 'No, he wasn't.' — nunca se dice 'Yes, I were' ni 'No, he didn't be'. El verbo BE en pasado es autosuficiente: no necesita 'did' para ninguna función.
