Must / Mustn't
Obligación fuerte y prohibición
'Must' expresa obligación FUERTE e INTERNA: el hablante mismo decide que algo es necesario, o comunica una regla con mucha autoridad. Es diferente de 'have to', que viene de afuera (reglas externas). Cuando un médico dice 'You must rest for a week', está usando su autoridad profesional para insistir en algo vital.
Un error típico de hispanohablantes es usar 'must' donde debería ir 'have to' porque en español 'debo' y 'tengo que' son casi intercambiables. En inglés, la distinción sutil es importante: 'I must finish this tonight' (me impongo esta obligación yo mismo), vs 'I have to finish this tonight' (el jefe me lo pidió / la fecha límite lo exige).
'Mustn't' (must not) es PROHIBICIÓN — significa que algo está completamente prohibido, que no está permitido hacerlo. No es lo mismo que 'don't have to' (no es necesario). Esta diferencia entre mustn't y don't have to es uno de los errores más frecuentes en exámenes y en conversación real.
'Must' no tiene forma de pasado propia. Para hablar de obligación en el pasado, siempre se usa 'had to'. Para el futuro, se puede usar 'will have to' o simplemente 'must' con contexto futuro claro.
