Should / Shouldn't

Dar consejos y hacer recomendaciones

En español usamos 'deberías' para dar consejos, pero también para obligaciones fuertes. En inglés, 'should' está reservado para recomendaciones y opiniones — no para obligaciones fuertes. Cuando alguien dice 'You should see a doctor', no te está obligando; te está aconsejando basándose en lo que cree que es lo mejor para ti.

La estructura de 'should' es simple y no cambia con ninguna persona: sujeto + should + verbo base. No hay 'shoulds' para tercera persona, no hay conjugaciones especiales. Es uno de los modales más fáciles de formar pero uno de los más difíciles de usar correctamente porque los hispanohablantes tienden a sobreusarlo donde debería ir 'must' o 'have to'.

Para hacer preguntas de consejo — pedir la opinión de alguien — se invierte el orden: Should + I/we + verbo base + ? 'Should I take the bus or the subway?' Estas preguntas equivalen al español '¿Debería...?' o '¿Me recomiendas...?'.

'Ought to' es sinónimo de 'should' y tiene exactamente el mismo significado. Es más formal y menos frecuente en conversación. 'Had better' también da consejos pero con una implicación de advertencia o consecuencia negativa si no se sigue el consejo: 'You had better leave now or you'll miss the train.'
