Infinitive of Purpose

Usar to + verbo para explicar el propósito de una acción

Cuando alguien te pregunta '¿Para qué fuiste al supermercado?', la respuesta natural en inglés es 'to buy food' — un infinitivo de propósito. Esta estructura expresa la RAZÓN o el PROPÓSITO detrás de una acción. Es uno de los patrones más útiles del inglés y uno de los que los hispanohablantes tienden a evitar, reemplazándolo por construcciones más largas.

La estructura básica es 'to + verbo en infinitivo': 'I went to the gym to exercise.' Existen variantes más formales — 'in order to' y 'so as to' — que tienen exactamente el mismo significado pero suenan más elaboradas o académicas. En conversación diaria, el simple 'to' es suficiente y natural.

Un error muy frecuente para hispanohablantes es usar 'for + -ing' para expresar propósito. En inglés, 'for + verbo-ing' tiene un uso diferente (describe para qué SIRVE algo, no para qué LO USAS). 'I went there for buying food' es incorrecto. La forma correcta es 'I went there to buy food'.

La diferencia entre 'for + noun' y 'to + verb' es fundamental: 'I went to the doctor for a checkup' (for + sustantivo — tipo de visita) vs 'I went to the doctor to get a checkup' (to + verbo — propósito/razón). Ambas son correctas, pero cambia la estructura gramatical.
