Verb to be — Questions

Preguntas con be y respuestas cortas

Para hacer preguntas con el verbo be en inglés, simplemente inviertes el orden: el verbo be pasa al inicio de la oración, antes del sujeto. No necesitas ningún auxiliar (DO/DOES). Es como voltear la oración: 'She is ready' → 'Is she ready?'

Las respuestas cortas (short answers) son fundamentales: si la pregunta lleva IS, la respuesta debe usar IS o ISN'T; si lleva ARE, usa ARE o AREN'T; si lleva AM, usa AM o AM NOT. En respuestas cortas afirmativas NUNCA se contrae el be con el pronombre: 'Yes, I am.' (nunca 'Yes, I'm.') / 'Yes, she is.' (nunca 'Yes, she's.').

Las preguntas con palabras interrogativas (Wh- questions) siguen el patrón: palabra Wh + be + sujeto + complemento. Por ejemplo: 'Where is she?' / 'What are they?' / 'How old are you?'. El verbo be va inmediatamente después de la palabra interrogativa.

Un error frecuente de hispanohablantes es usar DO/DOES para preguntar con be: 'Does she is tall?' es incorrecto. Be no necesita auxiliar para preguntas. La inversión directa es suficiente: 'Is she tall?'.

Las preguntas de confirmación (tag questions) también usan be: 'She is a doctor, isn't she?' / 'They are ready, aren't they?'. Si la oración principal es afirmativa, la tag es negativa y viceversa.
