in, on, under, next to, between, behind y más
Las preposiciones de lugar en inglés indican dónde se encuentra algo o alguien en el espacio. Son conectores que ubican un elemento respecto a otro: in (dentro de), on (sobre una superficie), under (debajo de), next to (al lado de), between (entre dos), behind (detrás de), in front of (delante de), opposite (frente a, enfrente de) y near (cerca de).
El error más común para hispanohablantes es traducir literalmente del español. 'En' en español corresponde tanto a in como a on en inglés, y la elección depende de si hay contención (in) o contacto superficial (on). 'El libro está en la mesa' → 'The book is on the table' (superficie), no 'in the table'.
La distinción in/on/at para lugar general requiere especial atención. In indica estar dentro de un espacio cerrado o delimitado (in the room, in London, in the box). On indica estar sobre una superficie o en contacto con ella (on the table, on the wall, on the floor). At indica una ubicación puntual o funcional (at home, at school, at the door, at the top).
In front of y opposite parecen similares pero no son idénticas. In front of significa directamente delante, como una persona frente a la pantalla. Opposite implica que hay algo (una calle, un espacio) entre los dos elementos: 'The pharmacy is opposite the bank' (están en lados distintos de la calle).
Between siempre requiere exactamente dos referencias: 'The library is between the school and the park.' Para tres o más elementos se usa among: 'She was among friends.' Hispanohablantes a veces dicen 'between the three buildings' — incorrecto en inglés estándar.
