Cuándo usar 'the' y cuándo no poner ningún artículo

El artículo definido 'the' señala que tanto el hablante como el oyente identifican la misma cosa específica. Funciona como un puntero compartido: ambos saben exactamente a qué objeto se refiere. En cambio, el artículo cero (ningún artículo) se usa para hablar de conceptos generales, categorías abstractas o cosas en su sentido universal.

El español siempre lleva artículo ('el libro', 'los libros', 'el agua'); el inglés con frecuencia lo omite cuando se habla en general. Decir 'I love the music' suena en inglés como si hablaras de una pieza musical específica. 'I love music' es la forma correcta para hablar de música en general.

Usa 'the' cuando la cosa ya fue mencionada antes y el oyente la conoce, cuando hay solo una de su tipo (the sun, the moon, the president), o cuando el contexto hace la referencia inequívoca (Can you open the window? — ambos saben cuál ventana).

El artículo cero aparece con plurales en sentido general (Dogs are loyal), con incontables en sentido general (Water is essential), con idiomas (She speaks French), deportes (He plays tennis), comidas (I like rice), y con expresiones de lugar habituales como home, school, work, bed, church, hospital cuando se refieren a la actividad, no al edificio.

Un error frecuente de hispanohablantes es poner 'the' ante idiomas, días de la semana en sentido general, o nombres propios de países y ciudades. 'I study the Spanish' o 'The Madrid is beautiful' son errores directos de transferencia del español.
