Register & Formality Shifts

La formal prefiere 'whom' como objeto ('the man to whom I spoke'), la nominalización ('the cancellation of the event'), la inversión enfática, la voz pasiva impersonal y evita las contracciones. La informal prefiere 'who' o el pronombre pospuesto ('the man I spoke to'), los phrasal verbs ('call off the event'), el orden directo, la voz activa y usa contracciones sin reparo.

El registro formal empaqueta procesos como sustantivos de origen latino ('conduct an investigation', 'reach a conclusion'), mientras que el informal usa verbos frasales de origen germánico ('look into it', 'work it out').

En registro alto se antepone junto al relativo: 'This is the report on which the decision was based.' En registro coloquial se deja al final (preposition stranding): 'This is the report the decision was based on.'
