Idiomatic & Fixed Grammatical Structures
El patrón proporcional 'the + comparativo..., the + comparativo...' expresa covariación: cuanto más de X, más (o menos) de Y. 'The more you practise, the better you get'; 'The higher the risk, the greater the reward.'
Con sujeto distinto exigen un pasado subjuntivo: 'I'd rather you stayed home', 'I'd sooner she didn't know.'
Es fijo: se usa 'had' (no 'have'), va con infinitivo sin 'to' y su negativo es 'had better not' ('You'd better not be late').
Existe además un repertorio de fórmulas concesivas y condicionales congeladas de registro formal o literario: 'be that as it may' (sea como fuere), 'come what may' (pase lo que pase), 'if anything' (si acaso, más bien), 'if need be' (si hiciera falta).
