Hedging & Cautious Language
Atenuar afirmaciones con modales, verbos de percepción, adverbios de grado y distanciamiento
El hedging es el arte de suavizar una afirmación para no comprometerse con una certeza absoluta. En la escritura académica y profesional en inglés, afirmar de forma tajante ('This proves that X') suena arrogante y poco riguroso; lo esperado es matizar ('This suggests that X may be the case'). Hedging no es debilidad: es precisión intelectual y cortesía. Reconoce que el conocimiento es provisional y que otros datos podrían matizar la conclusión.
El primer recurso son los modales de probabilidad: 'may', 'might', 'could', 'would'. 'The results may indicate a trend' es mucho más cauto que 'The results indicate a trend'. También el semi-modal 'tend to' generaliza sin absolutismo: 'Prices tend to rise in winter' evita afirmar que SIEMPRE suben. Estos modales bajan el grado de compromiso del autor con la afirmación.
El segundo recurso son los verbos de percepción y apariencia: 'seem', 'appear', 'suggest', 'indicate'. 'It seems that the theory holds' o 'The evidence appears to support this' distancian al autor del hecho, presentándolo como una interpretación y no como una verdad establecida. 'It seems/appears that + cláusula' y 'X seems/appears to + infinitivo' son los dos moldes esenciales.
El tercer recurso son los adverbios y cuantificadores de grado: 'somewhat', 'relatively', 'fairly', 'rather', 'to some extent', 'in some respects'. 'The method is somewhat unreliable' suaviza frente a 'The method is unreliable'. Y los adverbios de distanciamiento —'reportedly', 'apparently', 'arguably', 'presumably'— atribuyen la afirmación a una fuente externa o a una inferencia, no al autor.
El matiz de registro y el error del hispanohablante son claros. El español académico también atenúa ('parece que', 'podría indicar', 'en cierta medida'), así que la función se transfiere. El problema es el exceso o la mezcla: apilar 'It may possibly perhaps seem that...' resulta ridículo. La regla profesional es UN hedge por afirmación, no tres. Y cuidado con confundir hedging con vaguedad: hedge la certeza, no el contenido; sé preciso sobre QUÉ afirmas y cauto sobre CUÁN seguro estás.
