Past Perfect Continuous
Duración de una acción antes de un punto del pasado: had been + -ing
El Past Perfect Continuous es como leer el log de un proceso que llevaba tiempo corriendo justo antes de que ocurriera otro evento en el pasado. Enfatiza la DURACIÓN de una acción que venía sucediendo hasta un punto del pasado. Es la versión 'proceso en ejecución' del Past Perfect simple.
La estructura es: SUJETO + HAD BEEN + VERBO-ING. El bloque 'had been' es idéntico para todos los sujetos, y solo cambia el gerundio. Casi siempre aparece con marcadores de duración como 'for two hours' o 'since morning'.
Tiene dos usos principales. Primero, expresar cuánto tiempo llevaba pasando algo antes de otro momento pasado: 'I had been waiting for an hour when she arrived'. Segundo, explicar la CAUSA de un resultado pasado: 'My eyes were red because I had been crying'. El resultado (ojos rojos) se explica por la acción previa continua (llorar).
El error típico del hispanohablante es usar el pasado continuo simple ('I was waiting') en lugar del perfecto continuo cuando hay una acción anterior a otra. En español decimos 'llevaba una hora esperando cuando llegó', y esa idea de 'llevaba + gerundio' es exactamente 'had been waiting'. También es común olvidar el 'been' y escribir 'had waiting', que es incorrecto.
Otro fallo frecuente es intentar usarlo con verbos de estado. Verbos como 'know', 'be', 'have' (posesión), 'believe' no se usan en continuo; con ellos se emplea el Past Perfect simple: 'I had known her for years' (no 'I had been knowing her').
