Tiempos de la narración: combinar pasados para contar una historia
Contar una historia en inglés es como orquestar varios servicios que corren en paralelo y en secuencia. No basta con un solo tiempo verbal: necesitas cuatro piezas que trabajan juntas — Past Simple, Past Continuous, Past Perfect y Past Perfect Continuous — cada una con un rol específico en la línea temporal.
El Past Simple es el hilo principal: son los EVENTOS que hacen avanzar la historia, uno tras otro ('She opened the door, walked in and sat down'). El Past Continuous es el FONDO: acciones en progreso que rodean o interrumpen esos eventos ('It was raining when she arrived'). Piensa en el simple como el 'foreground' y el continuo como el 'background'.
El Past Perfect es el flashback: retrocede a algo que ya había ocurrido ANTES del momento de la historia ('When she arrived, the train had already left'). Es como consultar el estado anterior de un sistema. El Past Perfect Continuous añade la duración de ese trasfondo previo ('She was tired because she had been travelling all day').
El error más común del hispanohablante es usar solo el Past Simple para todo, aplanando la historia y perdiendo el orden temporal. En español el pretérito y el pluscuamperfecto ('llegó' vs. 'había llegado') se distinguen, pero al traducir muchos usan siempre el simple. Si un evento ocurrió antes de otro pasado, necesitas el Past Perfect: no 'When I arrived, he left' (si ya se había ido), sino 'When I arrived, he had left'.
Otro fallo típico es confundir 'when' y 'while'. 'While' introduce la acción larga en progreso (Past Continuous): 'While I was cooking...'. 'When' suele introducir el evento puntual (Past Simple): '...the phone rang'. Mezclarlos altera qué acción interrumpe a cuál.
Past Simple: acciones/eventos principales (secuencia) She woke up, got dressed and left. Past Continuous: fondo / acción en progreso interrumpida While she was sleeping, the storm began. Past Perfect: algo que ocurrió ANTES (flashback) When she arrived, the meeting had already started. Past Perfect Continuous: duración del trasfondo previo She was exhausted because she had been driving for hours.
