Defining Relative Clauses

Cláusulas de relativo especificativas: who, which, that, whose, where, when

'Whose' indica posesión y equivale al español 'cuyo/cuya/cuyos/cuyas': 'The student whose phone rang had to leave.' Es el pronombre relativo menos frecuente en la producción de hispanohablantes, quienes a veces lo evitan con construcciones largas: 'the student that his phone rang' (incorrecto).

'Where' sustituye a 'in which' cuando el antecedente es un lugar: 'The city where I was born.' / 'The office where she works.' 'When' sustituye a 'in which' o 'on which' con antecedentes temporales: 'The day when we met.' Ambos pueden omitirse en registros informales: 'The day we met.'

Por ejemplo: 'The book (that) I read was great.' ('that' es objeto, se puede omitir.) Pero: 'The book that changed my life was great.' ('that' es sujeto, no se puede omitir.)
