Prepositions of Movement

to, into, out of, through, across... para describir movimiento

Las preposiciones de movimiento describen cómo algo o alguien se desplaza de un punto a otro, a través de un espacio, hacia dentro o hacia fuera de algo. En español también tenemos 'hacia', 'por', 'a través de', 'desde', pero las preposiciones de inglés no siempre tienen una correspondencia uno a uno, lo que crea confusión.

La distinción más importante para los hispanohablantes es 'to' vs 'into'. 'To' indica dirección hacia un destino en general: 'I walked to the store.' 'Into' indica movimiento hacia el interior de un espacio cerrado o contenedor: 'She walked into the room.' En español ambas situaciones pueden expresarse con 'a', pero en inglés son diferentes.

Otro par problemático es 'onto' vs 'on'. 'Onto' implica movimiento: 'He jumped onto the stage.' 'On' indica posición estática: 'He was standing on the stage.' De modo similar, 'out of' implica movimiento hacia afuera de un espacio: 'She walked out of the building' — no simplemente 'out'.

Una regla crítica que muchos hispanohablantes no conocen: el verbo 'arrive' va seguido de 'at' (para lugares concretos, pequeños) o 'in' (para ciudades, países, zonas grandes), NUNCA de 'to'. 'I arrived to the station' es incorrecto. Lo correcto es 'I arrived at the station'. 'We arrived in Madrid' para una ciudad.
