Possessive Pronouns

mine, yours, his, hers, ours, theirs: reemplazan al sustantivo

En español, los pronombres posesivos coinciden en forma con los adjetivos posesivos: 'mi libro' y 'el mío' comparten la misma raíz. En inglés, son palabras completamente distintas: el adjetivo posesivo 'my' se convierte en el pronombre posesivo 'mine'. No comparten ningún elemento visual, lo que crea confusión para hispanohablantes.

La función de los pronombres posesivos es reemplazar una frase completa: 'adjetivo posesivo + sustantivo'. En vez de decir 'That is my book', puedes decir 'That book is mine' — el pronombre 'mine' reemplaza tanto 'my' como 'book'. Nunca van seguidos de un sustantivo; si hay sustantivo, debes usar el adjetivo posesivo.

La distinción entre adjetivos y pronombres posesivos es una de las más importantes del inglés elemental: my/your/his/her/our/their son ADJETIVOS (van antes de un sustantivo); mine/yours/his/hers/ours/theirs son PRONOMBRES (reemplazan al sustantivo). Nota importante: 'his' es la única forma que sirve como adjetivo Y como pronombre.

'Whose' es el interrogativo posesivo. Se usa para preguntar a quién pertenece algo: 'Whose bag is this?' La respuesta puede usar tanto adjetivo ('It's my bag') como pronombre posesivo ('It's mine'). No confundas 'whose' con 'who's' (contracción de 'who is').
