Expresar igualdad entre dos cosas
Mientras que los comparativos (-er / more) expresan diferencia, la estructura 'as … as' expresa IGUALDAD. 'She is as tall as her brother' significa que ambos tienen la misma estatura. Esta estructura tiene un paralelo claro en español ('tan … como'), lo que ayuda a los hispanohablantes — pero el error más común es olvidar el segundo 'as' o reemplazarlo con 'than'.
La forma negativa 'not as … as' es muy útil porque equivale a un comparativo de inferioridad: 'He is not as fast as his sister' = 'He is slower than his sister'. Es una forma más neutra y menos directa de expresar que algo es inferior, y muchos hispanohablantes no la usan porque desconocen que existe.
La misma lógica se extiende a sustantivos con 'as much as' (incontables) y 'as many as' (contables): 'I don't drink as much coffee as you', 'She doesn't have as many friends as her brother'. Aquí el error frecuente es confundir 'much' y 'many', replicando la confusión que ya existe con 'much/many' en general.
