There is / There are

Cómo expresar la existencia de personas, cosas o lugares

La estructura 'there is / there are' es la forma inglesa de anunciar la existencia de algo. No equivale directamente a ninguna palabra en español: es una fórmula que introduce un elemento nuevo en el discurso. 'Hay un libro en la mesa' = 'There is a book on the table'.

La regla de concordancia es directa: 'there is' va con sustantivos singulares e incontables; 'there are' va con sustantivos plurales. El verbo concuerda con el sustantivo real de la oración, no con 'there'.

Un error muy común de hispanohablantes es usar 'there is' con plurales por analogía con el 'hay' español, que es invariable. En inglés, 'hay tres libros' = 'there are three books', no 'there is three books'.

En lenguaje informal, se contrae: 'there's' = 'there is'. No existe la contracción 'there're' en inglés formal o escrito, aunque se pronuncia de esa manera en el habla. En la forma negativa se usa 'there isn't' o 'there aren't'. En preguntas, el orden se invierte: 'Is there...? / Are there...?'

Cuando hay una lista de cosas, el verbo concuerda con el primer sustantivo de la lista. Si ese sustantivo es singular, se usa 'is'; si es plural, se usa 'are'. Ejemplo: 'There is a cat and two dogs.' / 'There are two dogs and a cat.'
