Can / Can't (Ability)

Habilidades y capacidades con can

Can es un verbo modal que expresa habilidad o capacidad: la posibilidad de hacer algo porque sabes cómo o tienes la capacidad física para ello. 'I can swim' significa que sé nadar, que tengo la habilidad. Es el equivalente a 'saber + infinitivo' o 'poder' en español cuando se refiere a capacidad.

La regla más importante y que más errores produce: después de 'can' el verbo siempre va en su FORMA BASE, sin 'to' y sin ninguna conjugación. NUNCA se dice 'I can to swim' (con to) ni 'She can swims' (con -s). 'Can' es invariable — no cambia con ninguna persona: I can, you can, he can, she can, it can, we can, they can.

Para negar se usa 'can't' (contracción) o 'cannot' (forma completa, más enfática y formal). 'Cannot' se escribe en una sola palabra, no 'can not' separado (aunque 'can not' aparece en algunas variedades regionales). 'Can't' en inglés americano suena casi igual que 'can' para un hispanohablante al escucharlo, por lo que la pronunciación es importante.

Las preguntas se forman invirtiendo can y el sujeto, sin auxiliar: 'Can you drive?' (no 'Do you can drive?'). Este es un error muy frecuente: los hispanohablantes añaden 'do' porque lo usan en Present Simple, pero los verbos modales como 'can' NO necesitan 'do/does' para preguntas ni negaciones.

Además de habilidad, 'can' tiene otros usos: permiso informal ('Can I open the window?'), posibilidad ('It can be difficult sometimes') y solicitudes ('Can you help me?'). En A1 el enfoque principal es la habilidad, pero es útil saber que la misma palabra sirve para los otros contextos.
